Arduino EMG Sensor Module Guide
An Arduino EMG sensor module lets you read muscle activity as an analog signal and use it in simple interaction projects, classroom demos, robotics prototypes, or signal-processing experiments.
The hard part is not only wiring the sensor. The hard part is getting a real EMG waveform instead of a flat line, clipped output, or mains noise.
What An Arduino Setup Needs
Section titled “What An Arduino Setup Needs”A minimum Arduino EMG experiment needs:
- Surface electrodes on the skin.
- An EMG analog front-end module with gain and filtering.
- An Arduino analog input or external ADC.
- Safe isolated or battery power.
- Serial Plotter, browser waveform software, or another display tool.
Sampling Notes
Section titled “Sampling Notes”For simple envelope or gesture experiments, start by sampling at a stable rate and confirming that contraction changes the waveform amplitude.
AAW Lab generally recommends at least 800 Hz, with 1000 Hz or higher preferred for first debugging. Keep the code simple until the raw signal chain works.
Common Arduino EMG Problems
Section titled “Common Arduino EMG Problems”| Symptom | Common cause |
|---|---|
| Flat line | Wrong wiring, no power, poor electrode contact, or ADC input not connected. |
| Output stuck near top or bottom | Output midpoint, ADC range, or supply setup is wrong. |
| Very noisy waveform | Laptop charger, USB ground noise, long leads, poor contact, or nearby electronics. |
| No difference during contraction | Electrode placement, muscle choice, or front-end gain may be wrong. |
Use Noise and Flatline for the first debugging pass.
Recommended AAW Lab Module
Section titled “Recommended AAW Lab Module”For Arduino projects, start with AAW sEMG Flex. It gives you room to test wet electrodes, dry electrodes, and different acquisition setups before shrinking the mechanical design.
Choose AAW sEMG Mini if you already know you need a compact onboard dry-electrode board.
First Test Checklist
Section titled “First Test Checklist”- Use wet electrodes first.
- Use battery power where possible.
- Keep the sensor away from laptop chargers and large motors.
- Print or plot raw ADC values before adding complex filters.
- Confirm a clear amplitude increase during a simple hand contraction.
